The first trailer for the upcoming Netflix Barack Obama biopic, titled ‘Barry’ has arrived. The movie focuses on on the college years of Barack Obama, where the current U.S. president is played by Australian actor Devon Terrell.

In the movie, a young Barack Obama, known to his friends as “Barry,” arrives in New York City in the fall of 1981 to begin his junior year at Columbia University. In a crime-ridden and racially charged environment, Barry finds himself pulled between various social spheres and struggles to maintain a series of increasingly strained relationships with his Kansas-born mother, his estranged Kenyan father, and his classmates. Barry is the story of a young man grappling with those same issues that his country, and arguably the world, are still coming to terms with 35 years later.

This will definitely be interesting to see when it comes out. The current presidential election, alongside the racial and class related tensions in the U.S. society have been prevalent in every day life in the ’80s the same way it is now being apparant once more. The movie initially debuted at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, where Barry will be landing on Netflix on December 16th. Watch the movie trailer below.
